How to Build Sustainable Habits for the New Year

January 13, 2022by atlashartmann

Just as the door for 2021 closes, another for 2022 opens! Each year serves as a fresh slate to craft new goals, build upon habits, and to make the most of the following 365 days. Today, our team at Atlas Hartmann wants to share our best tips to create sustainable habits for the rest of the year!

Establish Your Goals

Before you can truly expand on your habits, you first want to recognize what it is you’re looking to improve and achieve in the first place. We recommend writing down 5 big things you want to make happen this year, and we’ll go from there.

Habit-stack

Let’s say one of the biggest things you want to prioritize this year is your self-care. Let’s begin by taking the actions you already perform daily that follow this goal and expand on each one individually. For example, maybe every morning, you wake up and drink a glass of water. Now, each time you arise, try doing a full body stretch for five minutes after your glass of water. This way, you’re simply taking something that’s already a part of your normal routine and introducing something small on top of it, in turn, building a new habit (i.e., habit-stacking).

Monitor Your Progress

Finally, we recommend monitoring your progress throughout the year so you can see how far you’ve come. This can be as simple as printing off a habit tracker document or writing your daily, weekly, and/or monthly habit additions in a journal. This also serves as a guide to visually see what works best for you personally and what could be better improved the following year.

Remember, creating habits isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey, and the experience will be different for everyone. Please try to avoid comparing yourself to others and instead, recognize your growth, no matter how big or small. Here’s to another year of growth and fulfillment. From our team at Atlas Hartmann to you, we wish you the happiest new year!
